New Technology Surveillance Bulletin:
Bio-Technology in the Health Sector

The bio-technology sector is growing in importance year after year, and is now a key sector in the Spanish economy. According to the latest data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute for the year 2011, 3,025 companies perform bio-technology actions in Spain, and their turnover and employment have increased at a rate of 25%. Over the last four years, there has been a very positive trend in the number of applications for patents in the bio-technology sector. This trend indicates not only that the sector is growing but also that it places great importance on Industrial Property as a means of recovering investments.

Collaboration with Spanish technology platforms
The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), as part of its Strategy 2012-2014 on Industrial Property for enterprises and entrepreneurs, has begun to collaborate actively with Spanish technology platforms. It places all its services at their disposal to ensure that the technology they generate is technology that has value, allowing for financial returns, improving business competitiveness and facilitating internationalisation.

This new Technology Surveillance Bulletin in Bio-Technology applied to the health sector has arisen out of collaboration between SPTO and the Spanish Association of Bio-Enterprises (ASEBIO) as a member of the Spanish Technology Platform of Bio-Technology Markets.

Like the other bulletins produced by SPTO, this Bulletin will be issued every quarter, giving easy-to-read, summarised information on the latest bio-technological patents published worldwide in four lines of research: nervous system, immune system, diabetes and macular degeneration. It will also include news items on activities carried out by SPTO that may be of interest for the sectors involved.

With this new Bulletin, and the renewed Bulletins on Biomass and Aquiculture and Fishing, in collaboration with the BIOPLAT and PTEPA Technology Platforms respectively, SPTO now issues, totally free of charge, a total of 14 Technology Surveillance Bulletins.
