Annual meeting of the Industrial Property Regional Information Centres



The annual meeting of the Industrial Property Regional Information Centres took place on October 1 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and was attended by representatives of the autonomous communities of Andalusia, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Navarra, the Basque Country and Valencia, as well as representatives of the SPTO.

During the event, key developments relating to the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) and to Industrial Property in general, were presented. Specifically, in view of the passage of the new Patent Law of July 25, a detailed study was made of this legislation, with special emphasis on its most novel aspects regarding the protection of inventions in Spain. Likewise, there was discussion of the possible changes to Spanish legislation as a result of the new European Community Trade Mark Directive.

Sharing experiences
During the meeting, experiences and opinions were exchanged. Each of the Regional Centres gave a detailed analysis of their activity during the year, providing a basis for evaluating the activities carried out in each Autonomous Community in the field of Industrial Property.  

On October 2, within the framework of the activities of the “Carlos Fernández-Novoa” Chair for Innovation and Industrial Property, a conference took place on “Industrial Property and Biotechnology in Industry” with papers presented by the SPTO and the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands. During the conference, attendees discussed patent searches in the field of Biotechnology; and Biotechnology, production and Industrial Property in the field of algae. The event ended with a visit by all the participants to the ITC facilities at Pozo Izquierdo.
