New technological alert: “Oxygen scavengers in plastic formulations”

The SPTO has published a new technological alert on “Oxygen Scavengers in Plastic Formulations". This publication contains references to patents for substances which, when incorporated into a package in the form of small bags or added to a polymer formula, help to retard oxidation of the packaged item, maintaining its initial properties for a longer time. The use of barrier materials or packaging the item in a modified atmosphere or in a vacuum do not entirely eliminate the oxygen from the environment created, either owing to a residual presence or to permeation through the walls of the polymer matrix. Oxygen scavengers or absorbers are the solution currently being employed, principally by the food and pharmaceutical industries.

There are currently 10 alerts available on the SPTO website:

The goal of these alerts is to provide information, which is updated daily, on patents published around the world in relation to specific technical topics.

Along with the Technological Watch Bulletins -quarterly publications that include a selection of the most important patents published in the world in 15 different technological sectors- the technological alerts complement the free technological surveillance services provided by the SPTO patent examiners, which have been on offer since 2002.
