Spanish inventors in Europe: EPO analysis

Publication of the European Patent Office’s Annual Report for 2015 shows that the number of applications for European Patents continued to grow during 2015, reaching a new record of almost 160,000, mainly driven by US and Chinese companies. The most active countries of origin were the United States, Germany, Japan, France and the Netherlands. The number of applications from Spain increased by 3.8% over 2014, making Spain, with its 1,527 applications, one of the countries of origin showing the most significant growth in European Patent applications.
The company with the most applications to the EPO was Philips, followed by Samsung and LG. The list of European applications from Spain was headed by the CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas), followed by Amadeus, Telefónica and Repsol.
By region
The most active region was Catalonia with 515 European Patent applications in 2015, followed by Madrid with 360, the Basque Country with 199, the Valencian Community with 97 and Andalusia with 96.

Technical sectors
Health technology, one of the fastest-growing sectors, filed the largest number of applications. The graph below shows trends by sector for applications originating in Spain and compares them with 2014:
