Cooperation between Spain and Israel in the field of Industrial Property

In 2013, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) and the Israel Patent Office (ILPO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in Patents. At their recent meeting in Geneva, held during the assemblies of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the two offices agreed to act together to inform their users of systems for protection in Spain and Israel. Details have been published on the ILPO and SPTO websites so that both Spanish and Israeli companies wishing to set up operations in one of the two countries can properly protect their intangible assets. This information is available in the Internationalisation section of the SPTO website.
PPH bilateral agreement
Also, in 2014, they signed a bilateral agreement known as a Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH), whereby SPTO or ILPO applicants can request fast-track processing of a Patent application in the other office.
Use of this system should facilitate the protection of inventions abroad and does not involve any increase in the standard cost of processing a Patent. It is up to the applicant to expressly request it on filing an application.
