OEPM Awards

OEPM Awards

On June 15, the awards ceremony for the 5th Annual Best Invention Awards—presented each year by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM)—was held in the gardens of the School of Industrial Organization (EOI), with the Minister of Industry and Tourism in attendance.

These awards, which recognize the best national patents and utility models, are one of the most prestigious honors for innovation in our country.

The primary objective of these awards is to support and promote scientific research and technological development by recognizing inventors who protect their creations through industrial property rights. This strategic commitment to intangible assets boosts economic competitiveness and helps rapidly channel knowledge to society as a whole.

The ceremony brought together representatives from some of Spain’s most prominent research institutions. During the event, the minister emphasized that we are in “a particularly good moment to celebrate our country’s innovative talent,” as evidenced by the 2025 application figures—the best year of the entire decade for industrial property in Spain.

Along these same lines, the director of the OEPM celebrated the growing social and economic importance of innovation and noted that the Office is the agency that “supports, promotes, and protects Spanish innovation, helping to ensure that this innovation has an impact, reaches society and the market, and enables Spanish companies to expand internationally and remain competitive.”

During the event, tribute was paid to the career of Elena García Armada, a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and CEO and co-founder of Marsi Bionics, the Spanish company that develops pediatric exoskeletons to help children with special needs walk steadily by mimicking natural movement.

Inventor Ana Sánchez Ramírez was the winner in the overall category—Best Patent—for developing a light-based biosensor that enables more precise analysis of biological samples. Thanks to this invention, it will be possible to make early biomedical diagnoses of diseases in their earliest stages, when biomarker concentrations are still very low.

Other award winners of the day included Jesús del Hoyo Muñoz, in the Best Patent by a Young Inventor category, for an electronic device that accurately measures the properties of optical components; Ana Fernández García, in the Best Patent by a Female Inventor category, for the development of a protective cover for the modular blades of wind turbines; and Francisco Enrique Monzó Pérez, in the Best Utility Model category, for the development of a special sock designed to correct walking problems associated with common conditions in children.
