First Geographical Indication for Artisanal and Industrial Products Originating in Spain

First Geographical Indication for Artisanal and Industrial Products Originating in Spain

“Joyería de Córdoba” was granted on July 29, 2026, as a Geographical Indication for Artisanal and Industrial Products (IGAI), thus becoming the first IGAI granted for a product originating in Spain.

This designation by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) grants “Joyería de Córdoba” immediate protection throughout the European Union (EU).

The EU thereby recognizes the distinctive characteristics of “Joyería de Córdoba,” based on the quality and reputation of its products, which stem from the specialized knowledge perfected and passed down by generations of local producers.

Córdoba’s jewelry tradition dates back over a thousand years. The filigree techniques used in its production were already documented in the city during the Caliphate era in the 10th century. Subsequently, local silversmith guilds helped consolidate a tradition of craftsmanship that remains alive today through specialized workshops, training centers, and a highly developed jewelry sector—meaning that these unique and exceptional pieces can only be crafted in Córdoba.

Registration as a geographical indication at the European level grants producers a collective industrial property right that can be enforced throughout the European Union against the misuse or imitation of the protected designation, such as infringements committed on various e-commerce platforms.

The system also benefits consumers by providing clear information on the origin and authenticity of products. In this way, it promotes more informed purchasing decisions and strengthens confidence in products bearing a protected designation, as this designation guarantees that they have been produced in a specific territory using specific techniques.

This milestone highlights the enormous potential of IGAIs to protect and promote Spanish industry and craftsmanship, enabling their knowledge, tradition, and expertise to gain recognition and protection throughout the European Union’s internal market.
