Regional Meeting on Industrial Property and SMEs in Uruguay

Regional Meeting on Industrial Property and SMEs in Uruguay

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) held a seminar in Montevideo, Uruguay, with the aim of promoting the strategic use of industrial property (IP) among SMEs in Latin America. This initiative, developed jointly with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), involved a total of 16 national IP offices from the region.

From July 20 to 23, participants exchanged experiences and best practices regarding the services that the various offices provide to small and medium-sized enterprises in their respective countries. During the various sessions, participants learned how designing an IP strategy enables companies and entrepreneurs to consolidate their projects, grow, and successfully expand into international markets.

Attendees were able to see firsthand how the industrial property ecosystem contributes to the global transfer of knowledge, while offering appropriate compensation to IP rights holders, thereby driving economic and social development worldwide.

Finally, topics of great interest to SMEs were also addressed, such as the valuation of intangible assets and obtaining financing backed by such assets.

Representatives from several of Spain’s most prestigious institutions in their respective fields participated in the initiative, including the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and ICEX.
