The SPTO closes 2025 with a record number of industrial property applications

Protected innovation is enjoying a boom in our country, as demonstrated by the fact that in 2025 there was an increase in applications for industrial property registration with the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM), with a total of 92,569. This is the best figure in the last ten years.

These magnificent figures confirm the positive trend that has been experienced over recent years, indicating greater use of industrial property rights in the Spanish innovation ecosystem in the management of its intangible assets.

As for national trademarks, 57,158 were applied for throughout 2025, 11.5% more than the previous year. Likewise, applications for the renewal of existing trademarks grew by 4.3% annually. International trademarks remained very similar to the previous year, with more than 2,000 applications.

Throughout 2025, 1,361 national patents were applied for, representing an increase of more than 11% over the previous year (1,450 if PCTs in the national phase are also taken into account). Meanwhile, the number of utility model applications grew by 1.7% to 2,886 (2,923, including PCTs in the national phase).

With regard to European patent validations in Spain, 23,295 were requested in 2025. Despite falling slightly compared to 2024, this figure remains higher than in 2022 and 2023.

Applications for industrial designs rose by 14.8%, maintaining the strong growth rate of recent years. In total, 16,032 designs were applied for registration.

In short, 2025 closes with figures that bring Spain a little closer to its goal of becoming one of the leaders in European innovation, contributing to the promotion of economic development and competitiveness.
