Enforcement of Industrial and Intellectual Property Rights in the EU

Enforcement of Industrial and Intellectual Property Rights in the EU:

results at the EU border and in the internal market – 2024

The EUIPO has published its report on the results at the EU border and in the internal market for 2024, based on data uploaded to the IPEP portal.

This year's report consists of a series of online graphs and tables, allowing users to navigate and explore different sections.

The main conclusions of the data analysis are:

- At the EU border:

o 19.7 million counterfeit or pirated items were seized (+12.25%)

o There is high demand for counterfeit goods through online purchases, particularly electronic cigarettes, vapes, and beauty products

o The main source of counterfeits continues to be China and Turkey, with the United Arab Emirates appearing in third place for the first time

- In domestic markets:

o Almost 98 million counterfeit and pirated products were seized.

o Notable examples include counterfeit CDs/DVDs, toys, and fashion accessories.

o The country with the most seizures is Italy (68%), followed by Spain (6.06%).

The authorities responsible for combating this crime face numerous challenges, such as: many points of access via various means of transport, limited capacity to carry out physical inspections, and significant growth in the volume of products traded via e-commerce.

The protection of industrial property rights requires strong collaboration and intelligence sharing between all parties involved, as well as the use of new technologies and tools.
