The aim of geographical indication protection for craft and industrial products is to preserve and develop cultural heritage, boost profitability and increase the appeal of traditional craft professions.
For consumers, geographical indication protection guarantees the quality and authenticity of a product, including its production methods and/or the traditions associated with its geographical origin.
For producers, it provides a way to enhance the value of their products and craftsmanship, as well as serving as an effective tool against unfair competition and counterfeiting. This protection will thus incentivise the production of quality products and have an overall positive impact on the regions where these products are made. It will contribute to job creation and strengthen the competitiveness of manufacturers and SMEs in these areas. It will also have a positive impact on national and regional tourism.

Producers who meet the requirements of the product specification may use the protected name, the Union symbol established for protected geographical indications, the mention 'Protected Geographical Indication' and the abbreviation 'PGI' on the designated products.

Additionally, any producer of a product covered by a protected geographical indication may join the producer group that applied for the geographical indication registration at any time, provided they comply with the product specification.
