Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the protection of geographical indications for craft and industrial products will become applicable on 1 December 2025, and applications for geographical indications for such products may be submitted.
Prior to the adoption of this European regulation, only designations of origin, geographical indications and traditional specialities guaranteed for agricultural products, food, wines and spirits could be registered in the European Union through the Ministry of Agriculture and the Autonomous Communities.
Regulation (EU) 2023/2411 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the protection of geographical indications for craft and industrial products introduces a uniform system for this type of product across the European Union, providing protection that was previously only available in certain countries. It aims to improve the position of producers to protect their craft and industrial products throughout the Union against counterfeiting and to give them incentives to invest into these products, as well as improving the visibility of authentic products on the markets, which benefits consumers. This will benefit the regions in which the producers operate by protecting the names of their traditional products, which will have a positive economic impact on micro-enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by strengthening their competitiveness. It is also expected to generate employment opportunities and retain and attract skilled workers. Finally, it will help boost tourism while safeguarding cultural heritage.
