The registration procedure for a geographical indication consists of two phases: a national phase and a Union phase. To obtain registration, the application must successfully pass both phases. The national phase begins when applications are submitted to the competent authority of each Member State. These must be submitted via the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)’s digital system for electronic applications. Once the application has passed the examination at the national level, the competent authority of the Member State concerned must forward the documentation to the EUIPO, initiating the Union phase.
Once registered, geographical indications are protected throughout the European Union and have an indefinite protection period. Once registered, it is possible to amend the product specification or cancel the registration.
