Convocatoria de Premios a la Mejor Invención concedida en 2022

Second Edition of the Awards for the Best Invention Protected by Industrial Property Rights.

On 22 March 2023, the summary of the call for submissions to the Second Edition of the Awards for the Best Invention Protected by Industrial Property Rights was published in the BOE (Official State Gazette): https://www.boe.es/diario_boe/txt.php?id=BOE-B-2023-8270

The application period is 23 March to 24 April 2023.

The first edition of these awards was held in 2022. A total of 84 applications were submitted, 40 for patents and 44 for utility models. Following the positive reception of the first edition of this award, especially given the specialised nature of the field, a second edition with similar characteristics was announced in 2023 with the aim that these awards would set a benchmark for the General State Administration’s support for innovation and its protection through industrial property rights.

The purpose of these awards is to highlight how patents and utility models granted in 2021 have served to protect research results.

For each invention, the award recipient must be an inventor of Spanish nationality or with legal residence in Spain, who appears as such in a national patent or utility model application granted by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office in 2021 and who meets the other requirements established in the call for applications.

Both natural and legal persons may take part in the competition and submit nominations.

As in the first edition, there will be two prizes in the general category – one for the best patent and one for the best utility model – as well as specific prizes for young inventors and women inventors.  Special mentions may also be awarded in all categories.

  • Best Patent (general category) – €4,000.
  • Best Patent by a Young Inventor (under 40 on the application submission date) – €4,000.
  • Best Patent by a Woman Inventor – €4,000.
  • Best Utility Model (general category) – €2,500.
  • Best Utility Model by a Young Inventor (under 40 on the application submission date) – €2,500.
  • Best Utility Model by a Woman Inventor – €2,500.

Applications are to be submitted on the SPTO e-Office by clicking “Inventions” > “Other procedures (PDAS/PATER/Subsidies)” > “Awards for the best inventions” (https://sede.oepm.gob.es).
