Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for predicting an exchange-correlation energy of an atomic system. The system obtains, for each atom of the atomic system, respective electron-orbital features at each grid point of a respective set of grid points corresponding to the atom. For each atom and grid point, the system processes the electron-orbital features using a pointwise neural network to generate a respective local feature at the grid point. For each atom, the system processes the local features at the respective set of grid points using a non-local neural network to generate respective global features at the grid points.
